Central and South America

Jews of Central and South America combine for the third largest concentration of Jews in the world. Jews can trace their heritage back to the 1500s, when conversos (Jews who converted to Christianity to escape persecution) came from Europe and settled in various parts of the region. Since then, Jews have established communities in many countries, built synagogues and assimilated into the larger society of their country of residence.
